Düsseldorf night out

While Düsseldorf is less than an hour drive from Essen, it took a lot of extra will power to get out the door and head into the 'big' city this Saturday. When the weather is yucky (like it has been for the last few weeks) laying around in Pjs is sometimes the only thing we want to do. But last Saturday we willed ourselves to have a little fun.
We made the easy - A52 the whole way - drive and parked under the modern art museum next to the Altstadt or old city center. After a little walk we settled on outside table under a heater - Europeans love the outside seating in the middle of winter - for a Spanish style meal on a side alley off Bolkerstrasse. The alley is a little Spanish quarter inhabiting a block of the traditional German old town - quite the dichotomy. After an uneventful meal we grabbed a (few) night caps of the traditional Kolsch beer at 'Zum Schlüssel'. There are a few good pictures of the neat 1850s brewery here. Its our go to in Düsseldorf and with guests and would recommend it to anyone looking for traditional German atmosphere.
Next time we visit the city I want to try -A Tavola - an adorable looking Italian restaurant down a cute alley in the Altstadt. While the reviews say the service is less than great, there is always a big crowd of happy looking people inside and I just wanna be apart of it.
All in all, It was a fun night with my honey and encouraged us to get out more... even when curling up on the couch sounds sooooo good.
