Browsing through the NYTimes Magazine's travel section I came across this article about the small seaside town of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage in France. I couldn't help but map the drive from Essen. While 4 hours and 40 minutes is a bit far for a weekend (and the weather has been less than cooperative for a coastal destination), I am filing this under 'someday? travels'.
The article describes it as less of a scene and more of a destination for a local family to build a sand castle. Perfect. Pictures of the town show empty sandy white beaches, voluptuous farmers markets and a quaint pedestrian downtown. An experience seemingly reminiscent of Cape Cod and other quaint New England coastal towns.
The article recommends the Art Deco Westminster Hotel which happens to have a Valentines special including: a double Executive room for one night, a 1/2 Bottle of champagne in your room, a dinner at the Brasserie Les Cimaises with wine and Breakfast in your room. Yeah, it is steep at 280 euro, but sounds AMAZING nonetheless!

La Touquet-Paris-Plage city website also has a list of small beach homes and apartments to rent for a weekend or week. That would be a perfect family holiday.
